Autobiography

With family members in the building business, I remember sitting on the playground as a young child, drawing blueprints of the home I was going to live in someday. Design is and was always, a passion of mine! So upon completion of my high school degree,  I began my formal Design training  many years ago at Drexel University. Four years later, I found myself sitting anxiously with a room full of newly hired college graduates. It had not been quite 24 hours since recieving my diploma when I offically became part of Bamberger's Executive Training Squad...headed into the world of Fashion Merchandising and product develpment.

My career in Design and Fashion had started! I was promoted 4 times within 4 years. My last position held being "Divisional Coordinator for Women's Shoes." Together the buyers and myself would seasonally "style out" the wholesale market ... pulling together looks, important colors and textures...prioritizing important visual/ merchandising statements that needed to be showcased on the selling floor of all 23 locations. As Coordinator I worked with both corporate visual people and store line merchants, managers and operational staff to satisfactorily carry out the desires of the women's shoe division. Identifying Trends...Visual Presentation....Merchandising...and Project Implementation have always been my strength and where I was positioned within the corporate structure.

I later moved to another NY based department store where I thoroughly enjoyed my travel to Europe. I was exposed to people, places, art, architecture, and design of Italy, Spain and France. I shopped the cities for fashion trends and  negotiated business in the countryside. Life was exciting but....What next?

My own business. The time was right, nail salons were going strong in California and Texas, though not yet here in NJ. For 15 years, as nail salon owner, I was personally rewarded daily! However, my intense self motivated personality began to feel stifled, so I added a boutique to the salon. Shopping for it and creating new retail space ignited something in me all over again and I suppose was the key catalyst in bringing me to where I am today.

In 2002, I sold my nail salon and enrolled at Parson School of Design where I completed my  Interior Design certification.  In 2003 I founded Designs by Susan. I feel my advanced training  has pushed me to new levels of understanding decorating, art, antiques, architecture, lighting, zoning, blueprints, and the methods/materials of design. My acquired drafting and drawing skills allow me to communicate my ideas effectively.

My corporate buying knowledge allows me to  navigate the wholesale markets and purchase wisely for my clients. I travel to the wholesale International Furnishing Show and many other trade shows throughout the year. I'm able to purchase goods from all over the world. As my years as Coordinator also taught me managerial skills...used daily implementing  projects today, my years as a salon owner  taught me how to become a good listener. I'm a designer who listens, who wants your home to be a reflection of you and your style... not mine.

Each and every leg of my journey to the world of
Interior Design has enriched me! My diversified  background allows me to bring to my client base a much larger skill set than those with limited exposure, experience, acknowledge and people skills. The path for me continues, with advanced training, seeking knowledge that will deepen my understanding of spatial elements...continually being inspired.  I look forward to all the individuals I will meet along the way as teachers, students, vendors and homeowners...remembering always: "There should be no place like home!"
